What is Islam?
Islam is a monotheistic religion that teaches belief in one God (Allah) and follows the guidance revealed through Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The word "Islam" means "submission to the will of God" and "peace."
With over 1.8 billion followers worldwide, Islam is not just a religion but a complete way of life that provides guidance for every aspect of human existence — spiritual, moral, social, and economic.
Islam emphasizes justice, compassion, mercy, and the pursuit of knowledge, encouraging believers to live in harmony with themselves, others, and the environment.
“Indeed, this religion is ease, and no one will ever make the religion difficult except that it will overwhelm them.”
— Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Sahih al-Bukhari
Foundations of Belief
The Six Articles of Faith
Every Muslim believes in these six fundamental articles. They form the foundation upon which all Islamic belief and practice is built.
Belief in Allah
The belief in one God — the Creator, Sustainer, and Master of the universe. Allah has no partners, equals, or children. He is All-Knowing and All-Merciful.
Belief in Angels
Angels are beings created by Allah from light. They carry out God's commands, record deeds, and serve as messengers. The angel Jibreel (Gabriel) delivered the Quran.
Belief in Scriptures
Allah sent divine books to guide humanity: the Torah, Psalms, Gospel, and the Quran — the final and preserved revelation for all of mankind.
Belief in Prophets
From Adam to Muhammad (PBUH), God sent thousands of prophets to guide humanity. Muslims honour all prophets including Jesus, Moses, and Abraham.
Belief in the Last Day
The Day of Judgment when all people will be held accountable for their deeds. This belief gives life purpose and encourages righteous living.
Belief in Divine Decree
Everything that happens is by the will and knowledge of Allah. This brings peace, patience in hardship, and gratitude in times of ease.
“Read! In the name of your Lord who created.”
— Quran 96:1 (The first revelation)
Sacred Scripture
The Holy Quran
The Quran is the final revelation from God to humanity, revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) through the Angel Jibreel over a period of 23 years. It has been preserved word-for-word in its original Arabic for over 1,400 years.
It covers all aspects of life — theology, law, morality, history, science, and personal development. Millions of Muslims worldwide have memorised the entire Quran by heart, a tradition that continues to this day.

Common Misconceptions About Islam
Many misunderstandings about Islam stem from misinformation. Let's address some of the most common ones.
“Islam promotes violence”
The truth: The word 'Islam' literally means 'peace.' The Quran states: 'Whoever kills a soul, it is as if he killed all mankind; and whoever saves a life, it is as if he saved all mankind.' (5:32). Violence is categorically against Islamic teachings.
“Islam oppresses women”
The truth: Islam gave women rights to own property, inherit wealth, choose their spouse, seek education, and work — over 1,400 years ago. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: 'The best of you are those who are best to their women.'
“Muslims worship Muhammad”
The truth: Muslims worship God (Allah) alone. Muhammad (PBUH) is honoured as the final prophet and messenger, but he is a human being — not divine. Muslims follow his example (Sunnah) as a model for righteous living.
“Islam is only for Arabs”
The truth: Only about 20% of the world's Muslims are Arab. Islam's largest populations are in Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nigeria. Islam is universal — it's for every human being regardless of ethnicity.
